Studying in North Sydney: a student's guide to the neighbourhood

North Sydney sits one train stop north of the Sydney CBD, across the Harbour Bridge — a business district with a village feel, harbour views, and some of the best-connected transport in the city.

Getting around

North Sydney station is on the main northern rail line, minutes from Wynyard and Central. Buses run across the bridge around the clock, and the Milsons Point ferry connects you to Circular Quay with the best commute view in Australia. Most students find they don't need a car at all.

Between classes

Walk down to Luna Park and Lavender Bay for the classic harbour photos; Wendy's Secret Garden is a five-minute walk and one of Sydney's favourite quiet corners. The Coal Loader at Waverton and Berry Island give you bushland walks minutes from a business district.

Eating well on a budget

The streets around Miller and Walker Street are dense with lunch spots — sushi, laksa, banh mi, dumplings — priced for office workers, which means fast and reasonable. Greenwood Plaza's food court is the rainy-day fallback.

Work and life

North Sydney is one of Australia's largest office districts, home to technology, finance, and professional-services employers — handy for part-time work within your visa conditions, and for the networks you'll want when you graduate.
